Fredericksburg FC (FFC) runs a local US Youth Soccer TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) program.

FFC TOPSoccer is a community-based program for young athletes with disabilities.

FFC TOPSoccer has been supporting the community since 2004 and is in its 15th year. FFC TOPSoccer seeks to provide a no-cost active environment not found in other soccer programs for players with disabilities. Because of this focus, the FFC TOPSoccer program is a bit different from many other TOPSoccer programs, and is very different from the local Special Olympics programs. This is by design. FFC TOPSoccer seeks to provide a somewhat unique activity opportunity for players with disabilities.

FFC TOPSoccer is not a team-based program, but rather is individual based. Using the slogan, “Your IEP for Soccer,” TOPSoccer focuses on each child, from profoundly physically and/or intellectually challenged to high functioning. TOPSoccer’s goal is to address each participant’s unique skills and abilities to provide a player-based program for exercise and activities that just happens to involve soccer balls of all sizes. FFC TOPSoccer accomplishes this goal through the use of buddies. The buddies, typically FFC soccer players and other school-aged volunteers, enable the players to participate and learn at their own pace.

TOPSoccer Buddies are invaluable volunteers who participate directly with individual players to enable participation in soccer activities. The TOPSoccer buddy is not a player and does not score goals. Buddies help the TOPSoccer player succeed at his own pace and keep the player as safe as possible. TOPSoccer Buddies can be a same-aged peer, a teenager or an adult. They typically are FFC soccer players, but they can also be someone who works with special needs children or someone who has no soccer experience, but a strong desire to enable children to have fun. Buddies are eligible for community service hours. To volunteer as a FFC TOPSoccer buddy, contact Toby Brown via eMail at [email protected].

FFC TOPSoccer Needs Your Support !

What Is a TOPSoccer Buddy?

A TOPSoccer buddy is a critical part of the TOPSoccer program. Buddies work with individual TOPSoccer participants in many ways. The best part is that FFC TOPSoccer buddies basically are asked to play soccer with the TOPSoccer athletes and just be there for them. It is a magical experience for BOTH – the TOPSoccer player and the buddy! We have found that the buddies get as much and in some cases MORE out of the program because of the experience of working with these special athletes!

Who Can Be a TOPSoccer Buddy?

Basically any student or athlete (regardless of soccer skill level) from roughly age 8 & up can participate. Adults are more than welcome as well! FFC welcomes anyone that wants to support and be involved in this incredible program! Community service hour forms are passed out to all buddies at the conclusion of each session.

How can you help?

There are a number of ways to support the program, even if your weekends are occupied with numerous activities including soccer games.

Parents and players can spread the word. Players and parents have access to numerous organizations that have community service hour or volunteer requirements. FFC TOPSoccer can benefit from volunteer buddies from Scout troops, school honor societies, church groups and others. Players and parents can help break through the bureaucracy by directly informing these groups of FFC TOPSoccer and its buddy needs.

Coaches can organize team events at FFC TOPSoccer on a bye weekend or a weekend where the players have a home game beginning after TOPSoccer ends (10:30 a.m.). The players are oftentimes moved by the experience.

Players and parents can volunteer directly as buddies. There is no season-long commitment required. FFC TOPSoccer needs you when you are free and welcomes your support.

Players, parents and coaches can recruit their friends to help. Soccer skills are not required to be a buddy. Buddies need not be FFC players.
